Why HanGeul exists

HanGeul started with a small frustration. Japanese learners have a well-loved app that teaches vocabulary through spaced repetition and typing, and the method holds up: you type each answer, the schedule brings words back right before you would forget them, and the levels give the whole thing a shape. Korean learners had nothing equivalent.

The usual options each fall short somewhere. Some are fun but shallow, others are powerful but fiddly to set up, and very few of them focus on what matters most for Korean: reading and typing real words, with feedback precise enough to name the exact letter you got wrong. HanGeul exists to fill that gap.

What HanGeul is

HanGeul is a typing-first course for Korean vocabulary. You learn a handful of words in a short lesson, and then spaced-repetition reviews bring each one back on a schedule tuned to how memory actually works. Every answer is typed using a built-in Korean keyboard, so you're practising production rather than mere recognition. When you miss, the app shows you the exact letter that went wrong instead of a blank “incorrect.”

The course runs to 60 levels and over 5,000 Korean words, carrying you from survival basics through to vocabulary at TOPIK 5 level, with native audio on every word and example sentence. It genuinely starts from the beginning: level 0 is a full interactive course in the Korean alphabet, so it works even if you can't read a single letter yet. Levels 0 to 3 are free, so you can find out whether the method suits you before paying anything.

How it gets built

HanGeul is independently built and run rather than backed by a company. That means the roadmap follows what learners actually need instead of what a growth target demands, and when you write in, your message reaches someone who works on the product rather than disappearing into a ticket queue.
