Your brother gets up from the sofa, and you'd like a glass of water. English has "while you're up". Korean has 일어난 김에, and the whole request is 일어난 김에 물 좀 가져다주세요.
김 is a small noun that takes a modifier in front of it, the way 때 and 데 do. 한 and 이상 work the same way. Each one takes a situation and builds the next clause on it.
~는 한: as long as
한 means a limit, so ~는 한 draws a line around a condition: inside this line, the next clause holds. English says "as long as", or "as far as" with verbs of knowing.
Making ~는 한
- Verbs, 있다, 없다: 는 한.있다 → 있는 한알다 → 아는 한
- Adjectives: ㄴ/은 한.가능하다 → 가능한 한
- Nouns: 인 한.학생 → 학생인 한
- Not: 지 않는 한.포기하다 → 포기하지 않는 한

있다있있는 한
제가 여기 있는 한 걱정하지 마세요.
As long as I'm here, don't worry.
살아 있는 한 그날을 잊지 못할 거예요.
I won't forget that day as long as I live.
제가 아는 한 그 사람은 거짓말을 안 해요.
As far as I know, he doesn't lie.
제가 기억하는 한 그 가게는 항상 여기 있었어요.
As far as I remember, that shop's always been here.
Put a negative in front and it often comes out as English "unless". 지 않는 한 says "as long as this doesn't happen". 특별한 일이 없는 한 is a stock phrase for "barring anything unusual".
포기하지 않는 한 기회는 있어요.
You've still got a chance as long as you don't give up.
특별한 일이 없는 한 내일 갈게요.
Unless something comes up, I'll go tomorrow.
비가 너무 많이 오지 않는 한 경기는 예정대로 진행합니다.
Unless it rains very heavily, the game will go ahead as planned.
네가 먼저 사과하지 않는 한 나도 말 안 할 거야.
Unless you say sorry first, I'm not speaking to you either.
※ 가능한 한 is how you say "as far as possible": 가능한 한 빨리 와 주세요. 가능한 is a modifier, so it needs the noun 한 to lean on. You'll see 가능한 빨리 in print all the time, but the careful form keeps the 한.
~는 이상: now that
이상 is the word on age limits, as in 19세 이상, nineteen and over. I read ~는 이상 the same way, as being past a certain point. It treats the first clause as settled, and the second says what follows, usually a must, a can't or a firm decision.
Making ~는 이상
- Something already done: ㄴ/은 이상.시작하다 → 시작한 이상듣다 → 들은 이상
- Something true right now: 는 이상.살다 → 사는 이상없다 → 없는 이상
- Adjectives: ㄴ/은 이상.확실하다 → 확실한 이상
- Nouns: 인 이상, and 아닌 이상 for the negative.학생 → 학생인 이상학생 → 학생이 아닌 이상

시작하다시작하시작한 이상
이미 시작한 이상 끝까지 해야 해요.
Now that we've started, we have to see it through.
약속한 이상 꼭 지켜야죠.
Now that you've promised, you have to keep your word.
한번 결정한 이상 후회하지 않을 거예요.
Now that I've made up my mind, I won't regret it.
한국에 사는 이상 한국어를 배워야 해요.
Since you live in Korea, you need to learn Korean.
학생인 이상 공부는 해야죠.
Since you're a student, you have to study.
이렇게 된 이상 솔직하게 말할게요.
Now that it's come to this, I'll be honest with you.
With a negative it swings round to "unless" as well. 아닌 이상 is the one you'll hear most.
천재가 아닌 이상 하루 만에 다 외울 수는 없어요.
Unless you're a genius, you can't memorise it all in a day.
증거가 없는 이상 그 사람이 했다고 말할 수 없어요.
Without evidence, we can't say he did it.
네가 말하지 않는 이상 아무도 모를 거야.
Unless you tell them, nobody will know.
So how do ~는 한 and ~는 이상 differ? ~는 한 keeps the condition open, so it holds only while it holds. ~는 이상 treats it as a fact you now have to live with, which is why a firm conclusion usually follows. In the negative the gap nearly closes, and 지 않는 한 and 지 않는 이상 are often interchangeable.
~는 김에: while you're at it
김 here means a chance that comes up because of something else. The first clause is something you're doing anyway, and the second is an extra you add because the moment suits it. The extra usually wasn't the plan.
Making ~는 김에
- Under way or about to happen: 는 김에.가다 → 가는 김에하다 → 하는 김에
- Already happened: ㄴ/은 김에.일어나다 → 일어난 김에오다 → 온 김에
- Usually verbs. It needs an action to hang the extra on.

슈퍼에 가는 김에 우유 좀 사다 주세요.
While you're going to the shop, could you get me some milk?
일어난 김에 물 좀 가져다주세요.
While you're up, could you bring me some water?
커피 타는 김에 제 것도 타 주세요.
While you're making coffee, make me one too.
부산에 간 김에 친구도 만났어요.
While I was in Busan, I saw a friend too.
청소하는 김에 창문도 닦았어요.
While I was cleaning, I did the windows too.
말이 나온 김에 내일 회의 얘기도 할까요?
Since it's come up, shall we talk about tomorrow's meeting too?
생각난 김에 지금 전화해야겠어요.
While I think of it, I'd better call now.
Notice how often 도 and 좀 turn up. 도 fits because the second thing is an addition, and 좀 softens the favour you're asking.
Compare examples 4 and 5. The trip to Busan came first, so 간 김에 looks back at it. The cleaning and the windows went on together, so 하는 김에 keeps its present form even though the sentence ends in the past.
※ ~는 길에 sounds close and does a different job. 집에 가는 길에 친구를 만났어요 only says where it happened: on the way home. 집에 가는 김에 친구를 만났어요 means you were going home anyway and took the chance to see one.
