(으)나, (으)므로, 고자, 거니와: connectors for writing
By Daniel Buckley · 10 minute read · TOPIK 4
Vocabulary
- 공사 - construction work
- 출입 - entry, going in and out
- 금하다 - to forbid
- 노력하다 - to make an effort
- 결과 - result
- 경기 - a match, a game
- 취소하다 - to cancel
- 소음 - noise
- 제공하다 - to provide
- 협조 - cooperation
There's a sign on a fence: 공사 중이므로 출입을 금합니다. Work in progress, so no entry. You know 공사 and you know 중, and then 므로 sits in the middle doing something nobody would say over dinner.
There's nothing new to think here. Each of these is a formal cousin of something you already use, so all you're learning is a new register.
The spoken form and its written cousin
(으)나: but
(으)나 does what ~지만 does, at a higher register. You'll see it in reports, news and essays, usually with 한다체 or 합쇼체 at the end of the sentence. You'll often see it on the past.
Making (으)나
- Stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ: add 나. ㄹ drops.가다 → 가나살다 → 사나
- Stem ends in a consonant: add 으나.좋다 → 좋으나
- Past: add 으나 to the 았/었 stem.갔으나노력했으나
- Nouns: add 이나.부자 → 부자이나
Pick a verb
가다갔어요갔으나
여러 번 전화했으나 받지 않았다.
I called several times, but nobody answered.
열심히 노력했으나 결과는 좋지 않았다.
We tried hard, but the results weren't good.

The food at that restaurant is good, but the service isn't.
날씨는 추우나 하늘은 맑다.
It's cold, but the sky is clear.
그는 부자이나 행복하지 않다.
He's rich, but he isn't happy.
※ Example 5 looks like the (이)나 that means "or". They're not related in use. If a clause follows, it's "but". If another noun follows, it's "or".
(으)므로: because
(으)므로 gives a reason, and it sounds like a document stating its grounds. It lives in notices, reports, rules and essays. Unlike 아/어서, it takes the past, and it can lead into an instruction, which is why you meet it on signs.
Making (으)므로
- Stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ: add 므로.오다 → 오므로살다 → 살므로
- Stem ends in a consonant: add 으므로.있다 → 있으므로먹다 → 먹으므로
- Past: add 으므로 to the 았/었 stem.왔으므로
- Nouns: add 이므로.공사 중 → 공사 중이므로
Pick a verb

This medicine may make you drowsy, so do not drive.
인구가 줄고 있으므로 학생 수도 줄 것이다.
Since the population is falling, student numbers will fall too.
※ Don't confuse this with (으)ㅁ으로, which you'll see as 함으로써. That one means "by doing", and it comes in a later lesson. For a reason, the spelling is 므로.
고자: in order to
고자 is the written cousin of (으)려고. It goes on a verb stem, with no tense in front of it, and it states what you intend to do. It's the opening of a speech or a formal email, and you'd sound odd using it with friends.
Using 고자
- Linking two clauses: verb stem + 고자.확인하다 → 확인하고자 메일을 드립니다
- Stating an intention: verb stem + 고자 합니다.말씀드리다 → 말씀드리고자 합니다
Pick a verb
말씀드리다말씀드리말씀드리고자 합니다
오늘은 한국의 교육에 대해 말씀드리고자 합니다.
Today I'd like to talk about education in Korea.
회의 일정을 확인하고자 메일을 드립니다.

We are working hard to provide a better service.
이 글에서는 두 나라의 문화를 비교하고자 한다.
This essay sets out to compare the cultures of two countries.
거니와: and on top of that
거니와 is the hardest of the four to use. It accepts A as given, then adds B to it, so it says "A, and what's more, B". It sounds bookish and a little old, so I'd learn to read it and leave it out of your own Korean for now.
Using 거니와
- Verbs and adjectives: stem + 거니와.좋다 → 좋거니와어렵다 → 어렵거니와
- Past: add 거니와 to the 았/었 stem.왔거니와
- Nouns: add 이거니와.학생 → 학생이거니와
그는 머리도 좋거니와 성격도 좋다.
He's clever, and what's more he has a lovely nature.
이 책은 내용도 좋거니와 값도 싸다.
The content of this book is good, and on top of that it's cheap.
날씨도 춥거니와 바람까지 세게 분다.
It's cold, and on top of that the wind is strong.
그 일은 어렵거니와 시간도 오래 걸린다.
That job is difficult, and besides it takes a long time.
다시 말하거니와 이번 일은 제 잘못이 아닙니다.
I'll say it again: this was not my fault.
Watch for 도 on both sides, or 도 and then 까지, as in examples 1 to 3. That's the giveaway. Example 5 is a set phrase for when you're repeating a point with some force.
이 약은 효과가 좋으나 값이 비싸다.
오늘은 휴일이므로 문을 닫습니다.
새 제품을 소개하고자 합니다.
길도 좁거니와 차도 많다.
시험이 끝났으므로 학생들은 집에 갔다.
그를 여러 번 만났으나 이름을 몰랐다.

Play it as often as you like.
A notice, all at once
Here's the kind of notice you'd find in the lift of a Korean apartment block. Three of the four connectors turn up in four lines.

There may be a lot of noise, so please keep your windows shut.
불편을 드려 죄송합니다. 협조를 부탁드립니다.
We're sorry for the inconvenience, and we ask for your cooperation.
You'll also see 죄송하오나 in notices like this. That's (으)나 with an old polite 오 inside it, and the sentence means "we're sorry, but".
Don't carry this into conversation. 바쁘므로 못 가요 said to a friend sounds like a legal notice from someone you've known for years. Spoken, it's 바빠서 못 가요.
