By Daniel Buckley · 12 minute read · TOPIK 5

Vocabulary

  1. 지역 - a region
  2. 인구 - population
  3. 연령 - age (formal)
  4. 자료 - data, materials
  5. 정리하다 - to sort out, to organise
  6. 껍질 - skin, peel
  7. 뿌리 - a root
  8. 대회 - a competition
  9. 출장 - a business trip
  10. 입사 - joining a company

Here's a poster: 제3회 한국어 말하기 대회, 참가비 1인당 오천 원, 연령별 시상. It's the third speaking contest, it costs five thousand won per person, and the prizes go by age. Four single syllables carried all of that.

These pieces are mostly Sino-Korean, and they turn up wherever Korean needs to be brief: tables, prices, forms and instructions. Each one is small enough to learn in a minute, and a few have more than one job.

별: sorted by

별 goes on a noun and means "going by that", so the things are grouped according to it. You'll see it all the time on Korean tables and charts. It's followed directly by a noun, or by 로 before a verb.

Noun plus 별

  • The category you're sorting by:지역 → 지역별연령 → 연령별학년 → 학년별종류 → 종류별월 → 월별
  • Before a verb: 별로.종류 → 종류별로 나누다

  4. 쓰레기는 종류별로 버려야 합니다.

Rubbish has to be thrown out by type.

  5. 월별 매출을 확인했습니다.

    I checked the monthly sales.

※ Don't confuse 종류별로 with 별로, the word from "not very", as in 별로 안 좋아요. That one stands alone and comes before a negative. And 성별, the word for gender on a form, is this same 별.

당: per

당 goes on a number or a unit and means "per". It's the word on price lists and in statistics. In conversation you'd usually use 에 instead: 한 시간에 만 원.

Unit plus 당

  • Written straight on, with no particle.1인 → 1인당시간 → 시간당개 → 개당리터 → 리터당

  2. 자료를 ___로 정리했어요.

째: how far along, or with everything on

째 has two jobs that look unrelated. On a number or a length of time, it says how far along you are: the second cup, the third day running. On a noun, it says the thing is left as it is, with nothing taken away.

The jobs of 째

  • Which one in order, usually with native numbers.둘째, 셋째두 잔째세 번째
  • How long it's gone on so far.사흘째며칠째다섯 달째
  • The whole thing, as it is. Often with 로.껍질째뿌리째통째로

  2. 포도를 씨째 먹었어요.

  3. 밥을 두 그릇째 먹고 있어요.

  4. 병째 마시지 마세요.

  5. 다섯 달째 일을 찾고 있어요.

  6. 꽃을 화분째 샀어요.

제 and 회: the numbered and the counted

제 is the one piece here that goes in front. It sits before a Sino-Korean number and makes it an ordinal, so 제3 is "number three in the series". It's the formal way to label chapters, laws, events and wars, and it's written straight onto the number.

회 counts how many times something happens, or which time this is. It's the written partner of 번, with one difference that matters: 회 takes Sino-Korean numbers, and 번 takes native ones. A label on a pill packet says 3회, and the pharmacist says 세 번.

제 and 회

  • 제 plus a Sino-Korean number: the nth.제1과제2장제3조
  • A number plus 회: how many times.하루 3회주 2회
  • 제 and 회 together: the nth holding of an event.제5회 영화제
  1. 제1과를 읽어 보세요.

    Read Lesson 1.

  2. 제2장에서는 한국의 역사를 다룹니다.

Chapter 2 covers the history of Korea.

  3. 오늘 제10회 말하기 대회가 열렸습니다.

  6. 야구 경기는 보통 9회까지 합니다.

A baseball game usually goes to the ninth inning.

※ You already know a word with this 제 in it. 제일, the most, is 제 plus 일, number one. 제일 좋아요 says it's in first place.

차: round, year or purpose

This is the 차 of 던 차에, and it has three more jobs. After a number, it marks a round or stage. After a number of years, it says which year of something you're in. On a noun, it gives the purpose of a trip or a visit.

Three uses of 차

  • Round or stage, with Sino-Korean numbers.1차 시험2차 면접3차 접종
  • Which year you're in. Written with a space.입사 3년 차결혼 10년 차
  • The purpose, written straight on.출장차사업차인사차
  1. 1차 시험에 합격했어요.

    I passed the first-round exam.

  2. 선생님이 된 지 5년 차예요.

  3. 연구차 일본에 다녀왔습니다.

1 / 3

Play it as often as you like.

Common mistakes

  1. 한 시간당에 만 원이에요.

    한 시간당 만 원이에요.

당 already means "per", so it takes no 에.

  2. 하루에 삼 번 드세요.

    하루에 세 번 드세요.

번 counts times with native numbers. 삼 번 means number three.

  3. 제3째 대회입니다.

    제3회 대회입니다.

제 already gives the order, so 째 isn't needed. For an event, it's 회.
