How 먹다 conjugates
- Find the stem. Take 다 off 먹다 and you are left with 먹.
- Check the last vowel. It is ㅓ, and any vowel other than ㅏ or ㅗ takes 어요.
- Join them. 먹 + 어요 gives 먹어요.
- Build the rest on it. The past tense adds ㅆ to the same base, giving 먹었어요, and the table above has the future and the formal form.
Using 먹다
Conjugates to 먹어요. The batchim ㄱ carries over into the next syllable, so it sounds like 머거요 but is spelled 먹어요, which is a classic typing trap.
아침을 먹어요.
I eat breakfast.
뭐 먹고 싶어요?
What do you want to eat?
