| Polite present | 와요 | |
| Polite past | 왔어요 | |
| Polite future | 올 거예요 | |
| Formal | 옵니다 |
The polite forms end in 요 and suit most conversations; the formal form is for announcements, presentations and first meetings. The same form works for I, you, she or they.
How 오다 conjugates
- Find the stem. Take 다 off 오다 and you are left with 오.
- Check the last vowel. It is ㅗ, and a stem ending in ㅏ or ㅗ takes 아요.
- Join them. The vowels merge as they meet: 오 + 아요 gives 와요.
- Build the rest on it. The past tense adds ㅆ to the same base, giving 왔어요, and the table above has the future and the formal form.
Using 오다
Conjugates to 와요. It's also how Koreans talk about weather: 비가 와요 (it's raining, literally rain comes).
친구가 집에 와요.
My friend is coming to my house.
비가 와요.
It's raining.
