A job advert says 경력 불문. A news report says 폭우에도 불구하고. A headline says 서울에 첫눈 내리다, with a verb ending you'd never use to a person. You can know every ending in this guide and still feel lost on a page like that.
Connectors for writing gave you the formal endings. This lesson is the formal phrases, plus what happens to grammar in a headline. You'll read nearly all of this, and you'll say very little of it.
에 있어서: when it comes to
에 있어서 names the area a statement applies to. It's a heavier 에서 or 에 대해서, and you'll find it in essays, speeches and business writing. On a verb it's 는 데 있어서, with a space, because 데 is a noun there. It often shortens to 에 있어.
외국어 학습에 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 꾸준함이다.
When it comes to learning a language, what matters most is consistency.
인생에 있어서 건강보다 중요한 것은 없다.
In life, nothing matters more than health.
이 문제에 있어서는 두 사람의 생각이 같다.
On this issue, the two of them think alike.
사람을 평가하는 데 있어서 학력은 중요하지 않다.
In judging a person, education doesn't matter.
※ This one came into Korean as a calque of a Japanese phrase, and style guides often suggest plain 에서 instead. The National Institute of Korean Language says it still isn't an error, only a matter of style. You'll read it constantly, but your own writing won't suffer without it.
(으)로 하여금: making someone do it
(으)로 하여금 marks the person who gets made to do something, and it travels with 게 하다 or 도록 at the end of the sentence. When you see it, look ahead for one of those. Speech would use 을/를 or 한테 and manage perfectly well.
이 영화는 관객으로 하여금 전쟁의 의미를 생각하게 한다.
This film makes the audience think about what war means.
정부는 기업으로 하여금 가격을 공개하도록 했다.
The government required companies to make their prices public.
그의 말은 나로 하여금 다시 시작할 용기를 갖게 했다.
His words gave me the courage to start again.
에도 불구하고: despite
불구하다 means to pay no regard to something, so this phrase says A was true and B happened anyway. On a noun it's 에도 불구하고. On a verb or adjective, you already know the first half: 는데도 with 불구하고 after it.
Making it
- Noun: 에도 불구하고.폭우 → 폭우에도 불구하고
- Verb: 는데도 불구하고.오다 → 오는데도 불구하고
- Adjective: ㄴ/은데도 불구하고.비싸다 → 비싼데도 불구하고
- Past: 았/었는데도 불구하고.노력했는데도 불구하고
- The most formal: ㅁ/음 with 에도 불구하고.바쁘다 → 바쁨에도 불구하고노력했다 → 노력했음에도 불구하고
Pick a verb
노력하다노력했어요노력했는데도 불구하고
폭우에도 불구하고 많은 사람이 모였다.
Despite the heavy rain, a lot of people gathered.
많은 노력에도 불구하고 결과는 좋지 않았다.
Despite a great deal of effort, the results weren't good.
비가 오는데도 불구하고 경기는 계속되었다.
Even though it was raining, the match went on.
값이 비싼데도 불구하고 많이 팔린다.
Even though it's expensive, it sells well.
여러 번 경고했는데도 불구하고 문제는 해결되지 않았다.
Despite several warnings, the problem wasn't solved.
그는 바쁨에도 불구하고 매일 책을 읽는다.
For all that he's busy, he reads every day.
※ This one does cross into speech, in formal settings. A speaker at a wedding might say 바쁘신데도 불구하고 와 주셔서 감사합니다, thank you for coming despite being busy.
을 막론하고, 을 불문하고: regardless of
막론 is "not discussing" and 불문 is "not asking", so both say this doesn't come into it. They usually follow a pair or a category, like age or sex. They're close to interchangeable, and in speech you'd use 에 상관없이.
남녀노소를 막론하고 누구나 참가할 수 있다.
Anyone can take part, regardless of age or sex.
이유 여하를 막론하고 폭력은 용서할 수 없다.
Whatever the reason, violence can't be excused.
나이를 불문하고 누구나 지원할 수 있습니다.
Anyone can apply, whatever their age.
성별을 불문하고 누구나 가입할 수 있습니다.
Anyone can join, regardless of sex.
경력 불문
Experience not required.
Example 5 is the job advert version. Adverts and notices drop the particle and the 하고, leaving just the noun and 불문. 나이 불문 and 학력 불문 work the same way, and they mean you don't need to worry about that line on your CV.
기에 앞서: before
앞서다 is to go ahead of something. 기에 앞서 is the ceremonial form of 기 전에, and you'll hear it in meetings and speeches as well as read it. A noun takes 에 앞서 directly. You wouldn't use it to say you'll call before you leave.
회의를 시작하기에 앞서 몇 가지 말씀드리겠습니다.
Before we begin the meeting, let me mention a few things.
본론에 들어가기에 앞서 용어를 정리해 보자.
Before turning to the main topic, let's sort out our terms.
약을 복용하기에 앞서 설명서를 읽으십시오.
Before taking this medicine, read the leaflet.
식사에 앞서 건배를 하겠습니다.
Before the meal, we'll have a toast.
위주로: mainly, centred on
This one is fine in speech. 위주 is "making something the main thing". After a noun, 위주로 says what something is mostly made up of, and 위주의 does the same before another noun.
요즘은 채소 위주로 먹어요.
I'm eating mostly vegetables these days.
이 수업은 회화 위주로 진행됩니다.
This class is mainly conversation.
시험에 나오는 내용 위주로 공부했어요.
I studied mainly what comes up in the exam.
학생 위주의 교육이 필요하다.
We need student-centred education.
치 않다: 하지 않다, shortened
Formal writing shortens 하지 않다, and what happens depends on the sound before 하. After a vowel or ㄴ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅇ, 하 loses its vowel and its ㅎ joins the next ㅈ to make ㅊ. After a final consonant pronounced ㄱ, ㄷ or ㅂ, 하 disappears altogether and the ㅈ stays. This is rule 40 of the Korean spelling rules, and it goes by sound, so ㅅ counts as ㄷ.
Two ways to lose 하
- After a vowel, ㄴ, ㄹ, ㅁ or ㅇ: 하지 becomes 치.흔하지 않다 → 흔치 않다원하지 않다 → 원치 않다만만하지 않다 → 만만치 않다심상하지 않다 → 심상치 않다필요하지 않다 → 필요치 않다
- After a consonant pronounced ㄱ, ㄷ or ㅂ: 하지 becomes 지.넉넉하지 않다 → 넉넉지 않다깨끗하지 않다 → 깨끗지 않다생각하지 못하다 → 생각지 못하다
이런 일은 흔치 않다.
This sort of thing is rare.
그 일은 결코 만만치 않다.
That job is no easy matter.
회의실 분위기가 심상치 않았다.
The mood in the meeting room was far from normal.
원치 않는 전화가 계속 왔다.
Unwanted calls kept coming.
집안 형편이 넉넉지 않았다.
The family wasn't well off.
생각지도 못한 선물을 받았어요.
I got a present I never expected.
A few of these have escaped into speech. 만만치 않다, 심상치 않다 and 생각지도 못하다 are all things you'll hear. For the rest, 하지 않다 is always correct, so you only need the rule for reading and for spelling.
다: the headline form
Headlines are short of space, so they drop particles, swap verbs for nouns, and use a comma to mark the subject. 정부, 전기 요금 인상 is "the government, electricity price increase", and you fill in the rest. Many headlines end on a noun like this. Many others end on a bare 아/어 form, as in 서울에 첫눈 내려.
A headline can also end on the bare dictionary form. That's not 한다체, since 내리다 here stands where 내린다 or 내렸다 would stand in the article. Think of English "Snow falls on Seoul", where a finished event sits in the present. To my eye it's less common in daily news than the other two, and more at home in feature pages and titles.
서울에 올겨울 첫눈 내리다
First snow of the winter falls on Seoul
마을에 새 도서관 문 열다
New library opens in town
정부, 내년 전기 요금 인상
Government to raise electricity prices next year
한국, 일본 꺾고 결승 진출
South Korea beat Japan to reach the final
The body of the article goes back to full 한다체, particles and all. You'll also find the bare form in chapter titles and in the section headings of history books, where something like 전쟁이 끝나다 labels an event more than it narrates one.
폭우에도 불구하고 대회가 열렸다.
성별을 불문하고 지원할 수 있습니다.
회의를 시작하기에 앞서 인사드립니다.
이 수업은 회화 위주로 진행됩니다.
이유를 막론하고 지각은 안 된다.
비가 오는데도 불구하고 경기는 계속되었다.
A short article, all at once
Here's the kind of report you'd find in a local paper. I've made this one up, but the phrasing is the real thing. The first line is the headline.
시민 마라톤 대회 열리다
City marathon takes place
폭우에도 불구하고 어제 시민 마라톤 대회가 열렸다.
Despite heavy rain, the city marathon was held yesterday.
나이와 성별을 불문하고 삼만 명이 참가했다.
Thirty thousand people took part, regardless of age or sex.
참가자들은 출발하기에 앞서 함께 준비 운동을 했다.
Before setting off, the runners warmed up together.
바람도 강해서 코스는 결코 만만치 않았다.
The wind was strong too, so the course was no easy matter.
Don't carry this into conversation. Tell a friend 폭우에도 불구하고 왔어 and you'll sound like the evening news. You'd say 비가 많이 오는데도 왔어.
Common mistakes
비에 불구하고 경기를 계속했다.
비에도 불구하고 경기를 계속했다.

친구야, 내일 만나기 전에 전화할게.
기에 앞서 belongs in a speech. With a friend, it's 기 전에.
