| Dictionary | 사다 | |
| Polite present | 사요 | |
| Polite past | 샀어요 | |
| Polite future | 살 거예요 | |
| Formal | 삽니다 |
The polite forms end in 요 and suit most conversations; the formal form is for announcements, presentations and first meetings. The same form works for I, you, she or they.
How 사다 conjugates
- Find the stem. Take 다 off 사다 and you are left with 사.
- Check the last vowel. It is ㅏ, and a stem ending in ㅏ or ㅗ takes 아요.
- Join them. The vowels merge as they meet: 사 + 아요 gives 사요.
- Build the rest on it. The past tense adds ㅆ to the same base, giving 샀어요, and the table above has the future and the formal form.
Using 사다
Conjugates to 사요. It sounds like the first syllable of 사과, so don't mix the two up when you're typing quickly.
선물을 사요.
I buy a present.
뭐 샀어요?
What did you buy?
