How 웃다 conjugates
- Find the stem. Take 다 off 웃다 and you are left with 웃.
- Check the last vowel. It is ㅜ, and any vowel other than ㅏ or ㅗ takes 어요.
- Join them. 웃 + 어요 gives 웃어요.
- Build the rest on it. The past tense adds ㅆ to the same base, giving 웃었어요, and the table above has the future and the formal form.
Using 웃다
The ㅅ batchim gives you 웃어요. Don't confuse it with 울다 (to cry), where a single letter changes everything.
왜 웃어요?
Why are you laughing?
아기가 웃어요.
The baby is smiling.
