| Dictionary | 있다 | |
| Polite present | 있어요 | |
| Polite past | 있었어요 | |
| Polite future | 있을 거예요 | |
| Formal | 있습니다 |
The polite forms end in 요 and suit most conversations; the formal form is for announcements, presentations and first meetings. The same form works for I, you, she or they.
How 있다 conjugates
- Find the stem. Take 다 off 있다 and you are left with 있.
- Check the last vowel. It is ㅣ, and any vowel other than ㅏ or ㅗ takes 어요.
- Join them. 있 + 어요 gives 있어요.
- Build the rest on it. The past tense adds ㅆ to the same base, giving 있었어요, and the table above has the future and the formal form.
Using 있다
Covers both existence (there is) and possession (to have). Note the double ㅆ batchim: 있어요.
시간이 있어요?
Do you have time?
고양이가 집에 있어요.
The cat is at home.
