| Polite present | 읽어요 | |
| Polite past | 읽었어요 | |

How 읽다 conjugates
- Find the stem. Take 다 off 읽다 and you are left with 읽.
- Check the last vowel. It is ㅣ, and any vowel other than ㅏ or ㅗ takes 어요.
- Join them. 읽 + 어요 gives 읽어요.
- Build the rest on it. The past tense adds ㅆ to the same base, giving 읽었어요, and the table above has the future and the formal form.
Using 읽다
The batchim is the double consonant ㄺ: 읽어요. A classic spelling challenge.
