ㅂ, ㄷ, ㅅ, 르 and ㅎ: irregular verbs

By Daniel Buckley · 14 minute read · TOPIK 1

Vocabulary

  1. 춥다 - to be cold
  2. 어렵다 - to be difficult
  3. 돕다 - to help
  4. 듣다 - to listen
  5. 받다 - to receive
  6. 낫다 - to get better
  7. 짓다 - to build
  8. 모르다 - to not know
  9. 부르다 - to call, to sing
  10. 그렇다 - to be so

듣다 is "to listen". By the rule from lesson 6 its present should be 듣어요, but Koreans say 들어요. 춥다 should be 춥어요, and it's 추워요.

A few groups of verbs change their stem along the way, and five patterns cover nearly all of them. The rules are short. What takes time is that some of these verbs are spelled exactly like regular ones, so you have to learn which is which.

What makes a verb irregular

The change only happens before a vowel. That means 아요 and 어요, the past built on them, and the 을 of the future. Before a consonant, as in 듣습니다 and 춥습니다, the stem stays as it is.

The five patterns

  • ㅂ: ㅂ becomes 우.춥다 → 추워요
  • ㄷ: ㄷ becomes ㄹ.듣다 → 들어요
  • ㅅ: ㅅ drops, and nothing merges.낫다 → 나아요
  • 르: 르 becomes ㄹ라 or ㄹ러.모르다 → 몰라요
  • ㅎ: ㅎ drops, and the vowel becomes ㅐ.그렇다 → 그래요

Each section below has a builder with regular look-alikes mixed in. It goes from the stem to the 해요 form, which is the one to learn.

ㅂ irregular verbs

Before a vowel, ㅂ turns into 우, and that 우 merges with the ending: 춥 + 어요 becomes 추우 + 어요, then 추워요. In the future, that 우 counts as a vowel, so it takes plain ㄹ: 추울 거예요.

This is the biggest group, and it's mostly adjectives, including a lot of words for feelings and textures. It's also open: every adjective ending in 롭다, 스럽다 or 답다 follows it, so nobody can give you a final count.

  1. 오늘은 추워요.

    Today (it) is cold.

  2. 한국어는 어려워요.

    Korean is difficult.

  3. 이 가방은 무거워요.

    This bag is heavy.

  4. 강아지가 귀여워요.

    Puppy is cute.

  5. 내일은 추울 거예요.

    Tomorrow (it) will be cold.

Two verbs take 오 instead and end in 와: 돕다, to help, becomes 도와요, and 곱다, to be lovely, becomes 고와요. Their future still has 우: 도울 거예요.

※ Looks irregular, but isn't: 입다 → 입어요, 잡다 → 잡아요, 씹다 → 씹어요, 좁다 → 좁아요. Plenty of action verbs keep their ㅂ.

ㄷ irregular verbs

Before a vowel, ㄷ becomes ㄹ: 듣 + 어요 gives 들어요, and the future is 들을 거예요. Before a consonant the ㄷ comes back, so you still write 듣습니다.

The group is small and closed, so learn it as a list: 듣다, 걷다 (to walk), 묻다 (to ask), 깨닫다 and 싣다. Most verbs ending in ㄷ are regular, including very common ones like 받다 and 닫다, and that's why the irregular few are easy to get wrong.

  1. 음악을 들어요.

    (I) listen to music.

  2. 어제 라디오를 들었어요.

    Yesterday (I) listened to radio.

  3. 공원을 걸어요.

    (I) walk through park.

  4. 길을 물었어요.

    (I) asked way.

※ Looks irregular, but isn't: 받다 → 받아요, 닫다 → 닫아요, 믿다 → 믿어요, 얻다 → 얻어요.

ㅅ irregular verbs

Before a vowel, ㅅ drops. The odd part is that nothing merges across the gap it leaves: 낫 + 아요 gives 나아요, never 나요. The future keeps its 으 for the same reason, 나을 거예요.

This group is small too: 낫다, 짓다, 붓다, 긋다, 잇다 and 젓다. Plenty of other verbs ending in ㅅ are regular. 웃다 and 씻다, two of the first verbs you'll learn, both keep their ㅅ.

  1. 감기가 나았어요.

    Cold got better.

  2. 집을 지어요.

    (They) build house.

  3. 물을 부어요.

    (I) pour water.

르 irregular verbs

Before 아요 or 어요, 르 becomes ㄹ라 or ㄹ러. The syllable in front picks up a ㄹ, and the ending starts with another: 모르 + 아요 gives 몰라요, and 부르 + 어요 gives 불러요.

The vowel comes from the syllable before 르. 모 has ㅗ, so it takes 라. 부 has ㅜ, so it takes 러.

The future is untouched, because 르 already ends in a vowel: 모를 거예요. Nearly every verb ending in 르 follows this pattern, so here guessing irregular is almost always right.

  1. 저는 몰라요.

    I don't know.

  2. 이 버스는 빨라요.

    This bus is fast.

  3. 노래를 불렀어요.

    (I) sang song.

  4. 머리를 잘랐어요.

    (I) cut hair.

※ Looks irregular, but isn't: 따르다 → 따라요, 들르다 → 들러요, 치르다 → 치러요. These three behave like ordinary ㅡ stems: ㅡ drops and no second ㄹ appears.

ㅎ irregular verbs

These are adjectives. Before a vowel they drop ㅎ and the vowel changes to ㅐ: 그렇 + 어요 gives 그래요, and 빨갛 + 아요 gives 빨개요. A ㅑ becomes ㅒ instead, so 하얗다 gives 하얘요.

Before 으, the ㅎ and the 으 both disappear. That's where 그럴 거예요 comes from, and 빨간, the form that goes before a noun in lesson 10.

The group is small: 이렇다, 그렇다, 저렇다, 어떻다, the colour adjectives and a few shape words like 동그랗다. Action verbs ending in ㅎ are regular, and so is 좋다. Lesson 18 covers the first four.

  1. 그래요?

    (It) is so?

  2. 날씨가 어때요?

    Weather is how?

  3. 사과가 빨개요.

    Apple is red.

  4. 눈이 하얘요.

    Snow is white.

※ Looks irregular, but isn't: 좋다 → 좋아요, 넣다 → 넣어요, 놓다 → 놓아요.

The rare ones: 우 and 러

푸다, to scoop, is the only 우 irregular. Where 주다 contracts to 줘요, 푸다 drops its ㅜ and gives 퍼요, never 풔요.

The 러 group keeps its 르 and turns the ending into 러. 푸르다, to be blue or green as of the sky or trees, becomes 푸르러요, and 이르다 in the sense of "to reach" becomes 이르러요.

Its twin 이르다, meaning "to be early" or "to tell on someone", is an ordinary 르 irregular and becomes 일러요. None of these will come up for a while, so don't lose sleep over them.

  1. 밥을 퍼요.

    (I) scoop rice.

  2. 하늘이 푸르러요.

    Sky is blue.

  3. 아직 일러요.

    Still (it) is early.

What about 하다, ㄹ stems and ㅡ stems?

These change too, but every verb of their shape changes the same way, so they're easier to treat as part of the regular system. Korean grammar counts ㄹ and ㅡ stems as regular for that reason.

하다 is formally irregular, because it takes 여 rather than 아 or 어. That gives 하여, which shortens to 해. It's the pattern you'll use most, and it never varies: 공부하다 becomes 공부해요.

ㄹ stems drop their ㄹ before ㄴ, ㅂ and ㅅ, so 살다 gives 삽니다, and later 사세요 and 사는. Many textbooks teach them with the irregulars anyway, since the change surprises people.

ㅡ stems drop ㅡ before 아 or 어: 쓰다 becomes 써요, and 바쁘다 becomes 바빠요. As with 르, the vowel before it picks the ending, so 바 gives 바빠요 and 예 gives 예뻐요.

How to tell if a verb is irregular

Spelling narrows it down, but it can't settle the question. Several common verbs are two different words with the same dictionary form, one regular and one not.

Same spelling, two verbs

  • 묻다: to ask is 물어요, to bury is 묻어요.
  • 걷다: to walk is 걸어요, to roll up is 걷어요.
  • 굽다: to grill is 구워요, to bend is 굽어요.

For everything else, these rules of thumb get you most of the way.

Rules of thumb

  • Ends in ㅂ: assume irregular if it's an adjective. The regular ones are mostly action verbs, plus the adjective 좁다.
  • Ends in ㄷ or ㅅ: learn the irregular ones as a list. Only about a dozen come up in everyday Korean, and the rest are regular.
  • Ends in ㅎ: irregular for colours, the 이렇다 family and a few shape words. Everything else is regular, including 좋다.
  • Ends in 르: assume irregular, except 따르다, 들르다 and 치르다.

Try it. Each sentence below has one conjugated verb.

  1. 음악을 들어요.

  2. 문을 닫아요.

  3. 옷을 입어요.

  4. 날씨가 더워요.

  5. 손을 씻어요.

  6. 감기가 나았어요.

  7. 이 커피가 좋아요.

  8. 노래를 불러요.

When you're not sure, look the verb up on the verb pages. Every verb in the course has a full conjugation table there, built on the same rules as this lesson, and the conjugator says so when a verb could go either way.

Common mistakes

  1. 음악을 듣어요.

    음악을 들어요.

듣다 is ㄷ irregular, so ㄷ becomes ㄹ before a vowel.

  2. 감기가 났어요.

    감기가 나았어요.

After ㅅ drops, the vowels stay apart. 났어요 is the past of 나다, a different verb.

  3. 선물을 발아요.

    선물을 받아요.

Don't overcorrect. 받다 is regular, like most verbs ending in ㄷ.

Frequently asked questions

What is an irregular verb in Korean?
A verb whose stem changes when an ending starting with a vowel is added, most often 아요 or 어요. 듣다 becomes 들어요 rather than 듣어요, and 춥다 becomes 추워요. Five patterns cover nearly all of them: ㅂ, ㄷ, ㅅ, 르 and ㅎ.
How many irregular verbs are there in Korean?
There's no fixed number, because the ㅂ pattern is open: adjectives ending in 롭다, 스럽다 or 답다 follow it, and new ones keep forming. Of the roughly 5,000 words in the HanGeul course, 85 follow the five main patterns. The ㄷ, ㅅ and ㅎ groups are small enough to learn as lists.
Is 하다 an irregular verb?
Strictly, yes. Korean grammar classes 하다 as irregular because it takes 여 rather than 아 or 어, giving 하여, which shortens to 해. In practice it's the most predictable verb in the language: 공부하다 becomes 공부해요, and every other 하다 verb does the same.
Are ㄹ verbs irregular?
Korean grammar treats them as regular, because every verb ending in ㄹ drops it the same way, before ㄴ, ㅂ and ㅅ: 살다 gives 삽니다, 사세요 and 사는. Many textbooks still teach them alongside the irregulars, since the change surprises people.
How do I know if a ㅂ verb is irregular?
Assume it is when the verb is an adjective, because nearly all of them are: 춥다, 어렵다, 귀엽다. The regular ones are a short list, mostly action verbs such as 입다, 잡다 and 씹다, plus the adjective 좁다.
Is 좋다 irregular?
No. 좋다 keeps its ㅎ and becomes 좋아요. The ㅎ irregulars are a small group: the 이렇다 family, colours like 빨갛다 and a few shape words.
